Description: Two ply design for a jacket. Not defined as a bedjacket, but the context of the photo, ribbon closure, and shortness of the design imply that it is. The sleeves are pleated to give a square shoulder effect typical of the 1940s (along with the hair style). The 2ply yarn is knitted on large needles to keep the tension loose, and there are panels of blackberry or trinity stitch. |

Description:
Plain cardigan with cabled sleeves. The 1980s saw what I believe to be the first manifestation of an interest in retro styles; this was styles of the 1940s - with narrow skirts and square shoulders (somewhat ahead of the huge padded shoulders that became the 1980s trademark). This pattern is one of Sirdar's "Nostalgia" series. |

Description:
Short sleeved ribbed sweater with an embroidered plain yoke section. The 1980s saw what I believe to be the first manifestation of an interest in retro styles; this was styles of the 1940s* - with narrow skirts and square shoulders (somewhat ahead of the huge padded shoulders that became the 1980s trademark). This pattern is one of Sirdar's "Nostalgia" series. Note that this particular style with small panels of fair-isle were popular in the forties because you could easily cheer up a sweater in utility colours with small amounts of more colourful wool. This could be either reclaimed wool - or "mending cards" of yarn which were not rationed at all - commercial yarn companies responded by producing "mending cards" in all kinds of wild colours which fitted perfectly with the multicoloured designs. The original forties sweaters would have been in 3 or 4 ply fingering yarns rather than double knitting. |

Description: Gloves for men, ladies, and juniors. The gloves are knitted over 4 needles.
So what makes them riding gloves you ask? Well, they are made using a yarn designed specially for the purpose (Strutt's Glove Cord), which has a special scrooped* finish (who knew?). I think my Father had some of this type of glove in silk (or possibly Strutt's Glove Cord - who knows?): *Scroop is a term used to describe a finish with synthetic fibers and silk. Scroop can be induced in silk in two ways: one way is to leave the gum of the silk (sericin) behind and not remove it, and the other way is by treating silk with organic acid such as formic, lactic, citric or acetic and drying without washing. In case of synthetic fibers, cohesive agents are used to increase the fiber-to-fiber friction. and this also increases scroop. If a fabric is made from a yarn having high scroop a harsh handle is produced. |

Description: Small booklet of 3 sweaters all in double knitting weight: V-neck with small vertical cabled stripes; round-neck with a staggered rib on the body and ribbed raglan sleeves; and shawl collar with purl stitched patterning. I personally think this is a really nice set for "6-14 years" (but maybe slightly younger kids these days) - all different - and designed for a single colour creating interest through textured stitches. |
