It was a quarterly magazine, and the first issue was published in January 1940. A few issues may have been missed during WWII, hence this issue is number "70".
In the 1970s it dropped the Needlecraft name, and became simply "Needlewoman"; then during 1977 it was incorporated with Stitchcraft monthly magazine. Because of this the numbering systems can appear confusing, with 1970s editions appearing to predate those of the 1930s - however the content usually makes the era unmistakeable.

Description: Lovely late fifties/early sixties style dress. It is knitted in an appealing light weight bouclé yarn, for which it may be hard to fine a direct replacement; there are quite a few DK bouclé types available and it may be best to check a tension square of your chosen yarn and adjust the size that you knit accordingly. The pattern is in fairly good condition but with the all-too-familiar horizontal crease which only affects the front photo not the instructions.

Description: A simple rib pattern, with a pleasing tramline effect, and shown off to best effect by a typical cheeky chappy very much of the era.
The pattern is in fairly good condition in terms of surface creasing (which is often a problem with these older P&B patterns), but it does have an unplasant tear at the side, though it does not affect the instructions.

Classic Sweaters for older kids

Fifties ribbed-lace cardigan

Pattern ID: Lavenda 447
Wool brand: Lister Lavenda DK
Yarn quantity: 11-13 (1 oz balls)
Sizes: to fit 36 - 40 inch chest

Wool weight: Stated double knitting but tension and needles seem to imply more like Aran or chunky weight
Needle size: 5mm, and 7mm
Tension (10x10cm): 15sts x 18 rows

Price: £3.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK
- check "prices" section for more information)

Description: Fifties fitted cardigan in ribbed lace stitch worked on large needles. It's worth mentioning that the yarn quantities and needle size are somewhat contradictory - 11 oz (308g) is very little for a long-sleeved cardigan in a thick yarn and yet the needle size is large. I can only conclude that this is a double knitting yarn knitted on large needles to make the required tension.
