Description: Small booklet of designs as pictured. This is a lovely set - and not only for the classic designs. It features wonderful early photos of Roger Moore; for all the ribbing (no pun intended) he had to put up with in the 60s and 70s he is clearly the look to which to aspire (although here he is having to adopt the cloak of a solid "dependable" - and older - man).
Features: "Cable pattern from Normandy" (DK); "Waistcoat for a live wire" (4 ply);"Executive Type" (3 ply and also with sleeveless option in addition to the long sleeves in the photo); "Classic Pullover" (DK also with a sleeveless version ).
The pattern is in good condition.

Description:
Needlewoman and Needlecraft was an amalgamation of two other magazines: Needlecraft, (first produced 1907), and The Needlewoman, (first produced 1919). It was a quarterly magazine, and the first issue was published in January 1940. A few issues may have been missed during WWII, hence this issue is number "58".
In the 1970s it dropped the Needlecraft name, and became simply "Needlewoman"; then during 1977 it was incorporated with Stitchcraft monthly magazine. Because of this the numbering systems can appear confusing, with 1970s editions appearing to predate those of the 1930s - however the content usually makes the era unmistakeable.

"Yoke and Collar Line Are New".
I have my own copy of this pattern which I will make one day - but they are "teen" sizes up to 34 inch chest only.

Cricket 9 oz; Plain pullover: 6/7 oz; Fair-Isle: 4 oz main plus 6 contrast

Sizes: 29 - 31 inch chest,
(9-12 years - 2 sizes)

Needle size: 3mm and 3¾mm or 2¾mm and 3¼mm
Tension (10x10cm): 28sts x 36 rows over stocking stitch using 3¼mm needles

Price: £3.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK

Description: Small booklet of 4 sweaters all in fingering 4 ply weight: V-neck cricket sweater with cable; round-neck slipover with a textured garter stitch; collared lumber jacket with texturing and mock breast pockets; and V-neck fair-isle slipover. Yet another good set of designs that I personally like very much. Sized for "9-12 years" (but maybe slightly younger kids these days).
The fair-isle slipover is ver "Wartime Farm" while the lumber jacket I believe (but do not know) was the pattern used to recreate the boy's red sweater in the recent TV adaptation of Greenshaw's Folly - part of the ITV Marple series.

Traditional vintage designs for boys (or girls)

Pattern ID: PB 444
Wool brand: Totem, Double Quick, Moorland

Description: Small booklet of 3 sweaters all in double knitting weight: V-neck with small vertical cabled stripes; round-neck with a staggered rib on the body and ribbed raglan sleeves; and shawl collar with purl stitched patterning. I personally think this is a really nice set for "6-14 years" (but maybe slightly younger kids these days) - all different - and designed for a single colour creating interest through textured stitches.

Charming early sixties dress

Pattern ID: Emu 2254
Wool brand: Emu Tweedle
Yarn quantity: 35-43 (1 oz balls)
Sizes: to fit: 32-40 inch chest (5 sizes)

Wool weight: 5 ply /4 ply
Needle size: 3¼mm and 2¾mm
Tension (10x10cm): 26sts x 36 rows over st st

Price: £2.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK
- check "prices" section for more information)

Description: Lovely late fifties/early sixties style dress. It is knitted in an appealing light weight bouclé yarn, for which it may be hard to fine a direct replacement; there are quite a few DK bouclé types available and it may be best to check a tension square of your chosen yarn and adjust the size that you knit accordingly. The pattern is in fairly good condition but with the all-too-familiar horizontal crease which only affects the front photo not the instructions.

Head to toe woolly oufit for 3-4 year old

Needle size: 3¾mm, and 3¼mm
Tension (10x10cm): 23sts x 31 rows

Price: £3.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK
- check "prices" section for more information)

Description: Quite a cute little outfit if you ignore the trousers - which may be cute depending on the climate where you live. It includes mittens and a choice of hats - the bobble hat shown on the cover, (oozing with masculinity), and a girl's version in the form of a bonnet. Some creasing and wear.

Pullover for a cheerful boy

Pattern ID: PB 419
Wool brand: Moorland DK
Yarn quantity: 11 (1oz balls)
Sizes: 32 inch chest - 1 size (11-13 years)

Wool weight: Double Knitting
Needle size: 4mm and 3mm
Tension (10x10cm): 20sts x 28 rows

Price: £3.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK
- check "prices" section for more information)

Description: A simple rib pattern, with a pleasing tramline effect, and shown off to best effect by a typical cheeky chappy very much of the era.
The pattern is in fairly good condition in terms of surface creasing (which is often a problem with these older P&B patterns), but it does have an unplasant tear at the side, though it does not affect the instructions.

Classic Sweaters for older kids

Pattern ID: PB 362
Wool brand: Nylox, Purple Heather, Moorland DK
Yarn quantity: 6-8 (1oz balls)
Sizes: 28 - 32 inch chest, (8-13 years)

Tension (10x10cm): 20sts x 26 rows for DK;
30sts x 38 rows for 3 ply

Price: £3.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK
- check "prices" section for more information)

Lady’s Magyar Cardigan

Pattern ID: Weldons 1525
Wool brand: Emu Zephyr Botany 4 ply
Yarn quantity: 11-12 (1 oz balls)
Sizes: to fit 34-38 inch chest (3 sizes)

Wool weight: 4 ply
Needle size: 3¼mm and 2¾mm
Tension (10x10cm): 30sts x 38 rows

Price: £2.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK
- check "prices" section for more information)

Description: Magyar? I learnt something - it's the sleeve construction which seems to be a kind of dolman. "A long sleeve with a deep armhole, tapering towards the wrist."

Fifties ribbed-lace cardigan

Pattern ID: Lavenda 447
Wool brand: Lister Lavenda DK
Yarn quantity: 11-13 (1 oz balls)
Sizes: to fit 36 - 40 inch chest

Wool weight: Stated double knitting but tension and needles seem to imply more like Aran or chunky weight
Needle size: 5mm, and 7mm
Tension (10x10cm): 15sts x 18 rows

Price: £3.00 (includes 2nd class postage within UK
- check "prices" section for more information)

Description: Fifties fitted cardigan in ribbed lace stitch worked on large needles. It's worth mentioning that the yarn quantities and needle size are somewhat contradictory - 11 oz (308g) is very little for a long-sleeved cardigan in a thick yarn and yet the needle size is large. I can only conclude that this is a double knitting yarn knitted on large needles to make the required tension.

Description: Pleasing pattern for chunky his and hers cable sweaters.
"So quick to make in thick wool and big needles, this sweater is knitted in a very attractive fancy rib pattern. It is equally suitable for a man or a woman, and will be a "must" for your winter wardrobe"

Fifties Sailing Sweaters
