Description: Loose-fit one-size dolman sweater with colourwork knitted from a chart. At first I though this was a sideways knit from cuff to cuff but you can see from the smaller inset picture that it's knitted in two halves, one from the cuff to the centre knitted sideways, and the other from the front waist, over the shoulder and down the to the back waist (increasing and decreasing as required); the second piece is started by picking up stitches down the centre front which joins the two pieces, and the welts are knitted on separately. This is a technically interesting knit which requires you to follow the instructions carefully, and some experience would be useful I think. |

Description: This is a lovely French design illustrated in bright colours - all of which was such a departure from conventional baby wear for us British in the 1980s. It's very simple but effective - the stitch is a mock Fisherman's rib where the "knit 1 below" rib is alternated with a plain knit row (so half the effort!). Note the tension of 50 rows to 10cm which is the effect of the Fisherman's rib "shrinking" the length compared with a stocking stitch 4 ply. |

Short sleeved ribbed sweater with an embroidered plain yoke section. The 1980s saw what I believe to be the first manifestation of an interest in retro styles; this was styles of the 1940s* - with narrow skirts and square shoulders (somewhat ahead of the huge padded shoulders that became the 1980s trademark). This pattern is one of Sirdar's "Nostalgia" series. Note that this particular style with small panels of fair-isle were popular in the forties because you could easily cheer up a sweater in utility colours with small amounts of more colourful wool. This could be either reclaimed wool - or "mending cards" of yarn which were not rationed at all - commercial yarn companies responded by producing "mending cards" in all kinds of wild colours which fitted perfectly with the multicoloured designs. The original forties sweaters would have been in 3 or 4 ply fingering yarns rather than double knitting. |
