Description: This is a lovely French design illustrated in bright colours - all of which was such a departure from conventional baby wear for us British in the 1980s. It's very simple but effective - the stitch is a mock Fisherman's rib where the "knit 1 below" rib is alternated with a plain knit row (so half the effort!). Note the tension of 50 rows to 10cm which is the effect of the Fisherman's rib "shrinking" the length compared with a stocking stitch 4 ply.

So what makes them riding gloves you ask? Well, they are made using a yarn designed specially for the purpose (Strutt's Glove Cord), which has a special scrooped* finish (who knew?). I think my Father had some of this type of glove in silk (or possibly Strutt's Glove Cord - who knows?):
"This article has been specially designed for glove making. It is particularly hard-wearing and its special scrooped finish imparts a characteristic feel to the gloves which are ideal for riding, driving, or any use where hard wear is important".

*Scroop is a term used to describe a finish with synthetic fibers and silk. Scroop can be induced in silk in two ways: one way is to leave the gum of the silk (sericin) behind and not remove it, and the other way is by treating silk with organic acid such as formic, lactic, citric or acetic and drying without washing. In case of synthetic fibers, cohesive agents are used to increase the fiber-to-fiber friction. and this also increases scroop. If a fabric is made from a yarn having high scroop a harsh handle is produced.

Description: Delightfully dated, I just love this classic gem of a low budget pattern for football supporter's kit from the good old days (when supporters had rattles and stood up at football matches) - or simply a striped scarf and hat.
This is a good pattern for plain hats, with instructions for no less than three scarves: a single thickness stocking stitch scarf with a garter border (so has a right and wrong side), a thicker scarf in rib (so the same front and back but uses more stitches), and finally a "tube" on 4 needles folded flat to make a double thickess scarf.

Description: Classic football supporter's scarf from days of yore - or simply a striped scarf - mittens - gloves - and a man's tie.
